NJ Recreation and Park Association
Facility Design Award 2018
Over the years, Bayfront Park in Lacey Township has been subject to erosion, and it was decimated by Hurricane Sandy. CME worked with the Township to obtain a grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority for the reconstruction of the park and the installation of shoreline stabilization measures. CME obtained a CAFRA permit from the NJDEP for the project and worked with the NJDEP and Save Barnegat Bay for guidance on landscaping and maintaining nesting habitats and patterns for diamondback terrapins in the area.
The project as designed and constructed incorporated a centrally located gazebo and picnic area constructed on a concrete paver patio within the northern portion of the site. The gazebo and picnic area serve as the center point to other site amenities. Located around the gazebo are nautically themed playground areas with safety surfaces. The playground areas were designed based upon age groups and include images of the local school mascot. The swing area included an infant swing, in which a parent and child can swing together facing each other.
Located outside of the circular perimeter of the gazebo and playground areas are two exercise equipment areas. The areas provide a spectacular view for those working out.
Extending beyond the central point of site is a stamped concrete walkway leading to an observation platform located at the shoreline. Binocular stands are provided on the observation platform allowing visitors, including those in wheelchairs, outstanding views of the Barnegat Bay and the historic Barnegat Lighthouse located across the bay. An information sign is also located on the platform.
The project amenities include solar parking area lights, bike rack, walking path, and landscaping improvements with native plant species. Gabion baskets were installed along the shore line in order to aid in erosion prevention and as protection for the site to dissipate wave energy in flooding events.
